What are the different types of structural construction techniques?
Among these, we find footings and foundations, piles, rafts and monolithic structural slabs.
The ISO-SLAB system enables the building of a monolithic insulated structural slab, where one of its key characteristics comes from the military domain, where the perimeter redistributes the load inwards up to 12'.
The central slab is 6" thick and the perimeter and/or the load-bearing sections (columns or internal load-bearing walls), have 12" or more of concrete.
The ISO-SLAB system can be combined with piles in the case of soil problems or soils with un-compacted backfill.
What is the frost protection offered with the ISO-SLAB system?
The ISO-SLAB system offers frost protection by using an angled insulating panel, commonly called a perimeter skirt, that its thickness and projection length, is adapted to meet requirements suitable to the installation region.
This proven technique comes out from the Canadian National Building Code.
Slab systems
Which ISO-SLAB system to choose for my project?
ISO-SLAB offers 3 (three) assembly types for insulated slabs to meet all kind of projects:
- ISO-SLAB 14" for 1-2 storey projects;
- ISO-SLAB 18" specific to passive double-frame building projects;
- ISO-SLAB 24" for multi-housing, commercial and industrial projects.
- Based on special requirements for a project, it is possible to combine 2 (two) assembly types.
With the ISO-SLAB system, can you make a ground floor or partial foundation installation?
It is possible to install the ISO-SLAB system for a ground floor or partial foundation.
Two (2) techniques are possible for such projects being:
- the installation of a standard foundation on footings, for the walls which will be backfilled, while the rest of the building, will use the ISO-SLAB system with its frost protection skirt or
- the installation of the ISO-SLAB system for the complete perimeter, where the section in the embankment will not have any frost protection. A foundation will be made on the ISO-SLAB slab with specific engineering calculations and details for the concrete reinforcement.
Is it included or not?
What is included with the ISO-SLAB system?
The ISO-SLAB installation kit includes:
- the EPS (expanded polystyrene) components for the perimeter shape;
- the frost protection skirt;
- the internal insulating components with the last internal insulating row for either, receiving the PEX radiant heating pipes or the flat insulation for installing the electric radiant heating;
- the U-shaped metal components to connect the assembly of the system and
- a step-by-step instruction manual.
What is not included and is requires to be bought locally when installing the ISO-SLAB system?
The concrete and wire mesh for which, the required quantities are mentioned in the proposal, as well as for any additional reinforcement (when required), detailed in the engineering plan and specific to the project.
Is there an engineer certification?
The reference capacities of the ISO-SLAB system are certified by a professional engineer. When required for your permit request with local authorities, an engineering plan specific to your project is available for a small fee.
The engineer's seal confirms the reinforcement and concrete details required, as well as the required frost protection based on:
- the geographic location and specifics to the site (snow load);
- the architectural plan for load transfers in the structure of the building and
- the soil composition based on the report of a geo-technician (triangle of grain size).
How much does it cost?
How much does the ISO-SLAB system cost and how can it be obtained?
The price of the system is not determined simply by the perimeter and/or the surface to be covered. The price is based on different criteria including:
- the nature and complexity of the project to be carried-out (i.e. residential, commercial or industrial);
- the number of ISO-SLAB components required, both for the perimeter and for covering for the central portion;
- irregularities to take into account from reviewing the plan and
- the quantity and thickness of required components for the frost protection skirt.
Requests for quotes and sales are made without any intermediary or middleman, via our website and for preciseness over our pricing, with as much information as possible about your project and ideally, accompanied by a plan or a complete sketch. These information's, as well as the installation location and considered schedule, will help us to better appreciate your type of project and provide you with a detailed proposal.
Based on your building location, to limit transportation costs, the production and shipping are carried-out from either two plants located in Quebec or British-Columbia in Canada.
Factory truck delivery (delivery charge supplement) or pick-up at the plant by your designated transportation company is available.
Does the ISO-SLAB system have a warranty?
The system is guaranteed by the certification of the project-specific plan by the engineer, who in fact, confirms the technical details to be observed.
The ground
How must the ground be prepared to receive the ISO-SLAB system?
It is required to have a flat and leveled work platform, after removing the vegetation portion. We recommend a bed of clean gravel (3/4") to cut the humidity transfer to the assembly and allow the connection to services (plumbing).
If it is necessary to raise the work plate to either raise the level of the installation or simply to level the whole installation, common use of basic construction rules are applied by either, using compacting sand by compacted layers of 12" or leveling with a 3/4" clean gravel bed.
Installation
Who can install the ISO-SLAB system?
Installation of the ISO-SLAB system is easy and requires a minimum of construction skills. Although the installation can be performed by a carpenter or a building contractor, most of the time, the installation is carried-out directly by the buyers of the system in a self-construction mode.
Is it complicated to install the ISO-SLAB system?
Not at all, the work is much more the management of different activities being:
- the intervention of an excavator for the preparation of the soil and the work platform to receive the system;
- the installation of the ISO-SLAB 8' long perimeter modules, pre-cut in pairs for the outside corners. The installation is carried out starting from the outer corners and closing the axes to the measures of the plan, all, respecting the leveling (laser) on the plate by using basic construction concepts (square lines, squaring, parallelism and constant upgrade);
- the mechanical planning (plumbing, electricity, radiant heating (water or electric)), filling of the surface with the various internal insulating rows and installation of reinforcements and wire mesh as indicated in the engineer's plan and
- the pouring of the concrete and finishing of the slab by a cement polisher.
Does the installation of the ISO-SLAB system require specialized tools?
A minimum of tools is required to enable the installation by a self-builder. Here is an overview:
- Rotary level laser;
- Measuring tape(s);
- Carpenter square;
- Handsaw with fine teeth;
- Black marker;
- Battery powered drill with an adapter for metal screws;
- Aviation type shears;
- Steel plaster spreading tool and
- Shovel and rake to correct the leveling of the plate (when required).
Origin of the concept & Patents
Where does the concept for the ISO-SLAB system come from?
The ISO-SLAB system was developed and perfected in Quebec (Canada), a region of the world, characterized by a harsh climate and variable temperature conditions. Its inventor has more than 40 years of experience in the construction industry.
Is the ISO-SLAB system's concept patented?
The ISO-SLAB system is patented in Canada, the United States and pending in other jurisdictions.
